Memories and Happy Places

We all have our “Happy Places,” places where we always feel relaxed, places where we reconnect with ourselves or our loved ones or nature, places that have lots of memories of happy times with those loved ones.

Jekyll Island State Park, off Georgia’s Coast, is one of those places for me, and has been for nearly 50 years.  It’s always a Happy Place for me.  So where are your Happy Places?  And what are you doing to preserve the memories of those happy times in those Happy Places?

My compelling reason for beginning to scrapbook 9 years ago, and the discovery that it was a real passion for me, was to begin to preserve those memories, not just of our Jekyll vacations, but of our lives.  I had boxes of pictures that had somehow never made it out of the boxes, many of which had no identification on them about the “who, what, when, where, why.”  So I began taking them out of those boxes and putting them in albums with descriptive words to go with them, aka journaling.

“Journaling” is a word that scares a lot scrapbookers.  But what is it, really?  It’s telling your story, the story of the people, the places, the moment in time, how you felt, how the people were connected.  Who, what, when, where, why.  And more.  How did you or the people in the picture feel, or why were they there?  As a published author, it’s one of my favorite parts of scrapbooking, usually done in my own handwriting.

So, for all my scrapbooking family and friends out there, why do you scrapbook?  Or are you waiting for the “right time” to take all those pictures out of the boxes or, more likely, the SD card or camera phone.  I think NOW is the right time to do it, to treasure the NOW of our pictures and memories.  Not just pictures of the past, but memories you’re making NOW with your spouse, your parents, your children, your grands, your friends.  Anyone who comments that there simply is no time in the NOW to do that (like my mother of four homeschoolers daughter), I just recommend to at least just jot down notes to match the snapshots and keep them in a journal so when the time comes, you’ve got what you need for the scrapbooks.

And, yes, Stampin’ Up does have a really awesome (and easy) Project Life memory keeping system which I would love to share with you and tell you about (or find it on my online store).  If you would like more journaling or scrapbooking tips, please just let me know.  There’s always time for that.  But, whatever method you use, I encourage you to just DO IT!  I would love to see those scrapbooks sometime.

Dixie
